POINT LEPREAU, N.B. - Workers at Atlantic Canada's only nuclear power plant have begun reloading fuel as part of its refurbishment.
NB Power says the workers at Point Lepreau started loading the first of 4,560 new fuel bundles into the generating station's reactor on Saturday.
Last week, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved the public power utility's request to begin reloading fuel.
Each fuel bundle is about the size of a fire log, weighs about 22 kilograms and can produce enough energy to power one home for 100 years.
The utility says the fuel reloading is expected to take up to three weeks.
The refurbishment is three years behind schedule and $1 billion over the original budget of $1.4-billion.
