A man is facing charges after a police officer was injured in downtown Halifax early Friday morning.

Police say officers on patrol spotted a man punch another man in the face at the corner of Prince and Argyle streets at 3:45 a.m.

When the officers ordered the suspect to stop attacking the 20-year-old man, he fled the scene on foot.

The officers chased him down to the corner of Grafton and Carmichael streets and tried to arrest him. Police say he resisted their attempts and a 36-year-old officer was injured during the struggle.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to one of his legs. He has since been treated and released and is recovering at home.

Police say the victim of the original assault was not injured.

Daniel James Mason, 33, of Halifax is facing charges of assault and resisting arrest in connection with the incident.
