Winter weather is on the minds of many New Brunswickers as the weekend approaches.

The threat of a nor’easter has some motorists scrambling to change their summer tires for something with a little more grip on ice and snow.

“I notice it got a lot busier just out of nowhere, since they announced the storm coming on Sunday,” says Kevin Boudreau, a tire specialist in Moncton.

“I think people are starting to realize how dangerous it is on the roads now with the severe winters we’ve been having.”

CTV meteorologist Cindy Day says investing in some snow tires may not be a bad idea.

“It’s difficult right now to say exactly who will get the snow and how much snow will fall,” says Day. “Having said that, it’s the end of October and time to have your snow tires on, especially in New Brunswick.”

Some garages say they have a week-long waitlist for motorists hoping to replace their summer tires and the owner of one engine repair shop in Dieppe says he has tuned up almost 50 snowblowers this week.

Boudreau estimates it takes about 45 minutes to install a set of winter tires, but with a long waiting list, some motorists may have to weather the storm without them.
