A 74-year-old woman is facing charges after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the eye in Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.
Sheamus Mason says the alleged incident occurred at the home of an elderly woman who lives in his neighbourhood.
“She started waving the knife around like this to me and that’s when I put my hand out like that and I asked her ‘can you please put the knife down?’” says Mason. “I started freaking out and started bleeding and the blood was inside my eye.”
Mason was sent to the IWK Health Centre for treatment. He underwent one surgery and could need more.
“He’s a 15-year-old boy. That should be at the front of it,” says Belinda Mason, the boy’s grandmother and legal guardian.
It has yet to be determined whether Sheamus will regain his eyesight.
“I guess if they have no way to fix my eye, then I guess I have no future left for basketball,” says the teen.
The woman accused of stabbing Mason is facing charges of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.
She was released from custody on a promise to appear in court at a later date, and also on an undertaking with conditions.
Mason’s grandmother says she is upset she wasn’t informed the woman had been released from custody.
“I’m angry as hell that the police did not contact me and let me know that she was out,” says Belinda.
Police aren’t saying what might have led to the alleged incident, but do confirm the suspect and alleged victim are known to one another.
Belinda says the woman’s home has become somewhat of a hangout for youth in the area but that she has told her grandson not to go there. However, she says there had never been an issue, until Saturday.
“She has told me on numerous occasions, my grandson has never given her a problem.”
When approached by CTV Atlantic, the suspect denied stabbing the teen.
“I didn’t stab him,” she said. “He’s making it up…I’m not saying anymore.”
