The storm which pounded most of the Maritimes during daylight hours yesterday saved its worst for Cape Breton overnight.

The Island awoke to a record snowfall for this date after more than 40 centimetres fell in the Sydney area, and it continued to snow throughout Thursday morning.

There are widespread cancellations again today due to the storm and all schools in eastern Nova Scotia are closed.

Highways remain open across the province, but many secondary roads are still waiting to be plowed out.

Many roads and side streets in Halifax remain snow-covered today and snow plows and crews are still working to clear the roadways.

Mayor Peter Kelly admitted that the city of Halifax should be doing a better job of clearing the snow, but others says the slow snow removal is to be expected during a storm like the one that hit the Maritimes yesterday.

"I think yesterday, considering the conditions they had, I think they did a fine job," said Halifax resident Andrew MacFarlane. "I mean, it's Nova Scotia in the wintertime. What do you expect?"

Police in Halifax say they were busy dealing with numerous weather-related accidents across the municipality.

They say they received 66 reports of collisions or crashes in connection with yesterday's snowstorm and issued parking tickets to motorists who ignored the winter parking ban and parked on Halifax streets.

Officers in Halifax issued 112 parking tickets in total, and 48 vehicles were seized because they were obstructing snow removal.

It was a similar story in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, where a rash of accidents were also reported.

Saint John and Charlottetown each saw 21 centimetres of snow, around 17 centimetres fell in Fredericton, while anywhere from 22 to 34 centimetres fell across parts of Halifax.

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Cindy Day says that while winds are picking up across the region, the worst of the storm is over.

"The watches and warnings have been lifted for all of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.," says Day. "The system is moving on out and we're in for a very nice weekend."
