HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia government will not introduce legislation today that would prevent a strike by nurses at Halifax-area hospitals.

Premier Stephen McNeil says he still hopes the sides can settle their differences before an April 3 strike deadline.

He says the government is monitoring developments and he promises to protect patient safety.

Health Minister Leo Glavine says he's been given no indication that the sides are ready to go back to negotiations.

Labour Minister Kelly Regan says there will be no legislation today.

The sides broke off mediated talks on Sunday.

A key demand from the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union is to increase nurse-to-patient ratios, something it says would improve patient safety.

The Capital District Health Authority says there is no evidence that shows mandated ratios guarantee better safety.
