Olympic gold medalist Heather Moyse was welcomed home to Prince Edward Island with cheers and tears Wednesday.
The two-time bobsleigh champion is back in her home province for a rest after she and teammate Kaillie Humphries raced to gold in Sochi, Russia, making them the first women’s bobsleigh team to repeat as champions.
“When you do it twice, it just shows, it shows the first one wasn’t by accident,” says Moyse.
As they were in Vancouver, Moyse’s parents were also in Russia to watch their daughter compete.
“It was pretty exciting, not the fact that it was the second, but the fact that it was a nail biter, right until the very end,” says Moyse’s mother Sharon.
Moyse also had a big cheering section at home. Maritimers gathered around their televisions to watch one of their own go for gold.
“I didn’t need to physically see what was happening here to know I had the support of P.E.I.,” says Moyse.
As repeat champions, Moyse and Humphries were given the honour of carrying the Canadian flag for the closing ceremonies.
“It’s very, very humbling and I feel overwhelmed and completely honoured that the nation chose us as a team to represent them by carrying the flag,” says Moyse.
Moyse say she plans on taking some well-deserved time off on P.E.I. before deciding whether or not to pursue a third Olympic medal in South Korea.
“I know that time will go by quickly, it just seems so far away right now,” she says. “Right now, I just want to enjoy this moment and enjoy the medal with everybody.”
The celebrations aren’t over for Moyse; her hometown of Summerside will honour her with a ceremony Friday night.
