Homeless shelters around our region count on the generosity of volunteers and fundraisers to provide critical services.

Georgette Roy has made it her mission to ensure Fredericton’s two shelters have everything they need. Ensuring people in her community have a warm and safe place to sleep is a top priority for her.

“I do it and don’t want any recognition,” says Georgette.

Georgette is known to be a compassionate and empathetic woman who has spent a lifetime giving back.

“As long as I can remember, mom was very generous and always helping people,” says Lynn Chenard, Georgette’s daughter.

For more than 15 years, Georgette has worked to help Fredericton’s homeless, organizing dinners and silent auctions in support of the city’s two shelters.

“Whenever I put these dinners on, it’s the most wonderful feeling, it’s so much better to give than receive,” says Georgette.

Since 2000, Georgette has helped to raise at least $60,000 for the shelters.

“She has a salon that gives haircuts for one day, so that money will go to homeless shelters,” says Lynn.

Georgette has led efforts to put together gift bags for the shelter’s clients, particularly around the holidays.

“So on Christmas morning, every single person in both shelters has a bag of wonderful prizes and gifts to open,” says Lynn.

“Her work for the homeless shelters has saved a lot of lives and that sort of giving and heartfelt giving is something that is truly, it’s almost beyond words,” says Warren Maddox, executive director of the Fredericton homeless shelters. “It's a wonderful thing to interact with Georgette.”

In addition to her own volunteer work, Georgette is very effective at encouraging other people to get involved in the community.

“She enlists all her friends, and we won’t begrudge her, we love doing it, because it’s Georgette,” says Kathy MacDonald, Georgette’s friend.

Congratulations to Georgette Roy, our Maritimer of the Week.

If you know someone deserving of our Maritimer of the Week award, we want to hear about it.
