Mary Fay and her junior curling team from Chester, N.S., are back from Denmark with gold medals around their necks.

“It's so amazing to be able to share that feeling and the moment with all of our friends and family,” said Fay.

The junior skip and her teammates Kristin Clarke, Karlee Burgess and Janique LeBlanc earned the world champion title Sunday in Copenhagen with a 7-4 win over the United States.

They're thanking their small town for its big support.

“Besides the five of us and our coach, there are so many other people who helped us to get where we are,” said Fay.

The team rejoiced with their fans on Tuesday and recalled what it was like to win.

“I've worked with Mary since she was eight years old and Janique and Karlee since they were 11 and 12 so to see all that hard work pay off and to see them representing Canada is amazing,” curling coach Andrew Atherton.

“Just hugging as a group and knowing we did it together was pretty special, and to get our medals and playing the national anthem is something I’ll never forget,” said Fay.

The team has been home for less than a day and already two of the curlers are back at school.

The championship win has qualified the young team for another world curling event in Edmonton this spring.

“We can be role models for younger people and to let people know if you're willing to work hard anything is possible,” said Fay.

“Just because you're from a small town doesn't mean you can't compete at that level.”
