RCMP are asking residents in the Antigonish area to look out for a scam appearing in mailboxes across the county.

Police say residents have been receiving plain envelopes addressed to the homeowner with an enclosed letter stating they are the winners of a Reader’s Digest sweepstakes.

The envelope also contains a cheque with the resident’s name and address printed on it.

The letter has a poor replica of the Reader’s Digest logo in black and white and the cheque is stamped Canadian Western Bank at the top.

Police say the letter asks the resident to call a phone number with a U.S. area code to have the cheque activated. The caller is then asked to provide personal information to obtain their prize.

Reader’s Digest has posted a warning about the scam on their website.

Police are reminding citizens not to give out personal information over the phone or otherwise, unless you are able to confirm who is on the other end.
